The Three Wish War has been a labour of love for Bill Pratt and it shows. The story asks the question of why do genies do what they do and why stop at three wishes? The central genie sees himself as something of a public servant, assisting mortals to attain greatness and generally improve the lot of humankind. But only three wishes would limit his goals. Wishes would be hoarded, greed would rule, and where is the fun in that? How can anyone learn without the opportunity to make and make good on a few mistakes? The genie genuinely enjoys his work, so why would anyone stop him at three wishes? Brad is a great test case for the genie’s philosophy. A good natured soul, and possibly a bit of an idiot, he has a lot of potential for learning, and he’s young so he has a lot of time in which to do it. Unfortunately, even with generally good intentions, he can cause a lot of chaos in the lives of innocent bystanders such as his less laid-back girlfriend, Laura. What can Brad learn from all of this? More importantly, what can the genie?
